Encounters with brown bears and wildlife hazards in remote national parks in western and northern Mongolia have resulted in park safety warnings for foreign trekking expeditions and off-grid horse treks.

Wilderness Travel Insurance Rules

  • Search & Rescue Sub-limits: Standard policies cover emergency hospital treatment, but specialized wilderness search-and-rescue (e.g. helicopter location in the Altai) requires an adventure sports rider with adequate rescue sub-limits ($20,000+).
  • Altitude Restrictions: Many Mongolian mountain routes exceed 3,000 meters above sea level. Check that your policy's trekking altitude cap covers your planned itinerary (standard basic policies often cap at 2,000m or 3,000m).
  • Licensed Guide Requirement: Australian policies routinely require that backcountry expeditions in dangerous wildlife zones be led by a certified local tour operator or licensed wilderness guide.

Advice for Trekkers

  1. Verify with your insurer that your policy includes unpaved backcountry and high-altitude trekking endorsements.
  2. Carry a registered satellite messenger (Garmin InReach or similar) with emergency SOS capabilities.

Common questions

Will travel insurance pay for a new flight on another airline?

Usually not straight away. Most policies expect you to use your own airline’s rebooking options first. Buying your own ticket without checking can lead to a declined claim.

Why does the date I bought my policy matter?

Insurers treat this event as publicly known from 19 Oct 2026, 11:00 pm AEDT. Policies bought after that generally won’t cover it.
