Research Process

How Hicaleb researches
Australian travel insurance.

Overview

Every coverage claim on Hicaleb is traced back to a primary document — the insurer's Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or policy wording — rather than marketing copy, press releases, or aggregator data. This approach means that what you read on this site reflects what the insurer is legally bound to honour, not what their advertising says.

This page explains the research process in full: which sources are used, how they are weighted, what data is recorded, how verification dates work, and how errors are handled when they are identified.

The methodology is applied consistently across all research pages. Where a specific page uses a different approach — for example, where pricing data is drawn from live quote engines — that is noted on the page itself.

Source hierarchy

Not all sources are equally authoritative. Hicaleb applies a strict hierarchy, using the most legally binding document available for each claim. Where sources conflict, the higher-ranked source takes precedence.

S1
Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)
The legally binding document that defines what is and is not covered. Issued by the insurer. Used as the primary source for all coverage limits, exclusions, conditions, and definitions on Hicaleb. Where the PDS and any other document conflict, the PDS governs.
S2
Target Market Determination (TMD)
A regulatory document required under the Design and Distribution Obligations (DDO) that describes who the policy is designed for and appropriate distribution conditions. Used to understand the intended scope of each product.
S3
Policy Schedule / Certificate of Insurance
Document issued to the policyholder confirming the specific terms of their cover. Used where it provides clarification of general PDS conditions, particularly for understanding how activation conditions are applied in practice.
S4
Insurer website and quote tools
Used for indicative pricing data and general product positioning only — not for coverage claims. Marketing copy on insurer websites is frequently simplified and may omit material exclusions or conditions that appear in the PDS.

Policy selection

Hicaleb selects policies for inclusion based on the following criteria:

01

Australian market availability

Only policies available for purchase by Australian residents through direct-to-consumer channels are included. Policies exclusive to employer groups, travel agents, or overseas residents are not covered.

02

Active PDS availability

An active, publicly available PDS must exist. Policies where the insurer has not published a current PDS accessible to consumers are excluded from coverage comparisons.

03

Comprehensive tier first

Where an insurer offers multiple tiers, research focuses on the most comprehensive policy available to the general market. Budget or basic policies may be included in specific comparisons where the comparison is relevant to that tier.

04

Market significance

Priority is given to insurers with meaningful market presence in Australia. Niche or specialist policies may be included where they are specifically relevant to the comparison topic (for example, an extreme sports specialist insurer in an adventure sports comparison).

What data is recorded

For each policy included in a comparison, the following data points are recorded, along with the PDS section reference and the date of verification.

Data point Source Notes
Emergency medical limit PDS (S1) Recorded as stated in the PDS. "Unlimited" recorded where the PDS uses that term. Sub-limits noted separately.
Medical evacuation limit PDS (S1) Recorded separately from medical expenses where the PDS distinguishes them. Combined limits noted as such.
Trip cancellation limit PDS (S1) Recorded as the maximum benefit stated. Conditions (e.g. non-refundable costs only) noted in the coverage summary.
Baggage limit PDS (S1) Overall limit recorded. Sub-limits per item type (e.g. electronics, jewellery) noted where relevant.
Policy excess PDS (S1) Standard excess recorded. Variable or choice-of-excess policies noted.
Activation conditions PDS (S1) Any condition required to activate coverage (e.g. booking with the card for credit card policies) is recorded as a key exclusion condition.
Key exclusions PDS (S1) Material exclusions relevant to the comparison topic are recorded. Not every exclusion is reproduced — always read the full exclusions section of the PDS.
Annual premium (indicative) Insurer website (S4) Sourced from insurer quote tools at the time of verification. Single traveller, standard destination, no pre-existing conditions unless stated. Pricing changes frequently — always obtain a current quote.

Verification and dating

Insurance policies change. PDS documents are updated when insurers alter terms, limits, or conditions. A coverage claim that was accurate in March may be incorrect by September.

To address this:

01

Every page carries a verification date

Each research page displays the date on which the data was last verified against the primary source documents. This date appears in the page header and in the structured data attached to the page.

02

PDS version is recorded internally

For each policy included in a comparison, the PDS version number and date are recorded internally. Where the insurer updates their PDS, the relevant comparison is flagged for review.

03

Pricing data is reviewed quarterly

Indicative pricing data is sourced from insurer quote tools and is subject to frequent change. Pricing tables are reviewed quarterly and after known insurer pricing updates. All pricing is noted as indicative and carries a verification date.

04

Coverage data reviewed on PDS update

Where an insurer issues a new PDS, the affected comparison pages are updated within 30 days of the new PDS becoming publicly available. The page verification date is revised accordingly.

Corrections policy

Errors occur. The corrections policy below describes how they are handled.

01

Correction on identification

When an error is identified — whether by the research team or reported by a reader — it is reviewed against the relevant PDS and corrected within 5 business days if confirmed.

02

Material corrections are noted

Where a correction materially changes a coverage position, limit, or exclusion, a correction note is added to the relevant page. The note states what was changed, the previous value, and the corrected value.

03

How to report an error

If you identify an error in any content on this site, email hello@hicaleb.com with the page URL, the specific claim, and the PDS reference you believe contradicts it. All reports are reviewed.

Limitations

Hicaleb research is designed to be accurate and primary-source based. It has the following inherent limitations that readers should be aware of:

  • Coverage summaries on this site represent Hicaleb's interpretation of PDS documents. They may not reflect how a claims assessor would apply the same policy to your specific circumstances. Always read the full PDS.
  • Pricing data is indicative. Travel insurance pricing varies by age, destination, trip duration, pre-existing conditions, and policy options selected. Indicative prices quoted here are for comparison only and may have changed since the verification date.
  • Not every insurer or policy is covered. Hicaleb does not purport to compare the entire Australian travel insurance market. The absence of a policy from a comparison does not indicate that policy is inferior.
  • Pre-existing conditions are not assessed. Hicaleb research does not account for how pre-existing medical conditions interact with coverage. Travellers with pre-existing conditions must obtain a personalised assessment from the insurer.
  • This site does not provide personal advice. Research on Hicaleb is general in nature and does not account for your individual travel plans, health history, or financial circumstances. It is not a substitute for advice from a licensed financial adviser.
